“When you get a glimpse of a small thing that you’re like “oh wow, that moved me and I need to follow that”, following that would be the best advice I could give.”

“Where are you from?”- the question that often comes loaded with connotation, has sparked inspiration for writer and artist Sabina McKenna. “[The question] assumes that you’re not meant to be here if you look different, it gets a bit tiring having to explain why you’re here and why you exist.”

Sabina recently launched an online photojournalistic project titled just this, which is an exploration and discourse regarding cultural identities in Australia. Her goal is to open up positive conversations about multiculturalism in our country, and finds her motivation from “seeing my creativity as something that can validate and celebrate other people’s identities, as well as my own”.

When we asked Sabina what she wanted to be in 2020, her answer was BE AMBITIOUS.

What does BE THAT GIRL mean to you?

Being a part of something powerful!

What keeps you motivated?

Seeing my creativity as something that can validate and celebrate other people’s identities as well as my own.

The Youth of Australia needs to:

Be hopeful, brave and take action for the future.

Remind yourself:

That your people are out there, you just have to find them!

Meet the class of 2020 and join us as we ask them, “what do you want to be in 2020?”
